Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Injection

Ultrasound-guided PRP injections at IN Radiology

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy uses a concentrated preparation of your own blood platelets, which is injected into a targeted area to support tissue healing.

At IN Radiology, PRP injections are performed using ultrasound guidance, allowing the doctor to visualise the treatment area and guide the needle accurately to the intended target. This helps improve precision and minimise the risk of injury to surrounding structures.

What can PRP injections be used for?

PRP may be used as part of the treatment of a range of musculoskeletal conditions, including:

  • Tendon problems

  • Ligament injuries

  • Plantar fasciitis

  • Some joint conditions, including osteoarthritis

Your doctor can advise whether PRP is an appropriate treatment option for your individual condition.

How does PRP work?

PRP treatment begins by taking a small amount of blood from your arm. The blood is then processed to create a concentrated preparation of platelets.

The PRP is injected into the treatment area, where the concentrated platelets and associated growth factors are intended to support the body's tissue-healing processes.

Because PRP is prepared from your own blood, the treatment uses your own platelets rather than an externally sourced injectable material.

Ultrasound-guided PRP injections

Ultrasound allows the treating doctor to see the relevant anatomy in real time and accurately guide the needle to the target area.

This can be particularly important when treating tendons, ligaments, joints and other musculoskeletal structures, where precise placement of the injection is required.

What happens during a PRP procedure?

Your appointment generally involves five steps:

  1. Blood is drawn from your arm.

  2. The blood is processed to concentrate the platelets.

  3. The treatment area is cleaned and local anaesthetic is administered.

  4. The PRP is injected into the target area.

  5. A dressing is applied.

Please allow approximately 45 minutes for your procedure on the day.

Potential benefits of PRP

  • Uses your own blood and platelets

  • Is minimally invasive

  • Allows targeted treatment of the affected area

  • May help reduce pain and improve function

Results vary between individuals, and improvement may take several weeks. Some patients may require between one and three injections.
